Art exhibit to celebrate Black History Month

February 09, 2012

Mayor Linda M. Balzotti is happy to announce that City Hall will host art work from the Massachusetts Hall of Black Achievement at Bridgewater State University.

“I am pleased that we were able to work closely with the Office of Institutional Diversity at Bridgewater State University to make this exhibit a reality,” said Mayor Balzotti.  “I hope that by learning about the historic contributions these individuals have made to their field and the community will serve as an inspiration to all.”

The 12 portraits, which will be paired with biographies of the individuals represented, will be on display on the first floor of City Hall, 45 School St. beginning Tuesday, Feb. 21st through Friday, Feb. 24th during normal business hours.  City Hall is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The HOBA portraits were developed by the Rev. Larry Johnson and Ted Charron to showcase the significant contributions and achievements of African American, Cape Verdeans and Hispanics of African descent. The portraits are a teaching and learning resource for children and adults.

About HOBA

Founded in 1987, the Massachusetts Hall of Black Achievement (HOBA) at Bridgewater State University aims to discover, detail and disclose the significant achievements and contributions of people of color. HOBA  preserves, teaches, researches and makes available for advanced inquiry and public awareness all of its work in an effort to create new scholarly endeavors, institutional pursuits and, most important of all, uplift and broaden social conscience, enlighten the unenlightened and make the country a better place in which to live. HOBA is a repository of the records of the significant achievements and contributions of African Americans, Cape Verdeans and Hispanics of African descent. The hall also serves as a forum for research, discussion and analysis of the significant contributions that people of color continue to make in this country and around the world.
